Structural steelwork is the general name for load-bearing and auxiliary building elements and stand-alone structures made of steel or alloys.
Load-bearing elements include columns, beams, frames and trusses. Stand-alone structures include lighting masts, towers and mezzanines. Structural steelwork also includes reinforcement cages, embedded parts and other small elements needed for assembly and installation. The most common materials are channels, I-beams and tubes. Sheet steel structures are also structural steelwork. Connection methods include welds, rivets, threads and fasteners. Casting, widely used in the last century, is a thing of the past.
The advantages of steel structures over reinforced concrete are obvious: fast erection, no limits on size and configuration, less demanding foundation requirements, the ability to dismantle and relocate, high rigidity, strength and seismic resistance, and aesthetics. With competent design, steel products are usually more cost-effective thanks to fast commissioning and accurate cost calculation.
The disadvantages (there are always some) include the need for protective treatment and monitoring of its condition. Steel structures are also not always sensible for some types of permanent construction, especially large residential buildings. That said, some of the most famous steel structures are the Eiffel Tower, the Golden Gate Bridge and the dome of St. Isaac’s Cathedral.
